A detective in Port Elizabeth managed to track down a good Samaritan who made a citizens arrest on Tuesday which gave SAPS a lead in an investigation.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the detective was making inquiries in the vicinity of the crime scene when someone from a nearby clinic informed him that the man is the husband of a patient.
She says the man will now meet with the Investigating Officer to take his statement.
A teenager was arrested by the man, moments after he grabbed a phone out of a woman's hand in Cape Road.
The 17-year-old suspect had two ID cards in his possession, one belonged to a 66-year-old fisherman who was attacked alongside his 76-year-old friend.
The men were fishing at the Blue Hole in Marine Drive on Monday when they were attacked.
Colonel Naidu says the teenager appeared in the Nerina House Juvenile Court on Thursday where the case was remanded to 10 February.
The suspect remains in custody.
