The man who shot the sons of Kouga councillor Jaques Alexander was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on two counts of attempted murder.

Juavandré "Varkie" Louw, 23, pleaded guilty to shooting the victims at the Beachfront Nightclub in Jeffreys Bay on 17 March.

Asif and Jacquin Ruiters were shot and wounded just two weeks after Alexander survived an attempt on his own life.

Asif was shot in his liver while the bullet penetrated Jacquin's colon.

Luxolo Tyali, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, confirmed that Louw was sentenced in the Humansdorp Magistrates Court on Thursday.

According to Tyali, Louw was sentenced to 15 years on each count, but the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently.

This means that he will spend an effective 15 years in prison.

Louw was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

When news of the Ruiters brothers shooting first came to light, questions were raised as to whether the incident was linked to that of their father.

The police however said that the incidents were seemingly not linked.

Alexander said though the family was not happy with the sentence imposed, the matter was now in God's hands.

"We are fully aware of the threats he received if he talks.

"He had to plead guilty to protect himself, but we still believe that the truth shall be revealed," he said.
