Drowning tragedy devastates Kariega community

The Kariega community is in mourning following the deaths of two children whose bodies were found floating in the Willow Dam on Tuesday afternoon.

Lorenzo Marais, 6, and Miguel Baartman, 8, were learners at Seagull Primary School and Laerskool Winterberg Primary School respectively.

A frantic search for the boys ensued after they went missing from their homes on Sunday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said the boys were last seen alive at a park close to their home in Tamboville, in the Kamesh policing precinct.

According to Janse Van Rensburg, their families reported them missing on Monday.

She confirmed that the bodies were discovered on Monday at approximately 12:30.

Algoa FM News has learned that members of the community had flagged down members of the Nelson Mandela Bay Emergency Services who happened to be in the area, to alert them of the find.

In a Facebook post expressing their condolences, Seagull Primary School said Marais was a Grade One learner at the school.

"His contagious smile will continue to be remembered by his classmates and peers.

"The school as a whole is saddened by his passing and we are calling on the community at large to keep the broader Marais family in your prayers during their time of grief."

The post also asked that prayers be sent for his classmates and teachers. "May your beautiful little soul rest in eternal peace, Lorenzo."

Laerskool Winterberg extended their condolences to the Baartman family.

They said Baartman will be missed by his classmates and the entire staff.

An outpouring of condolences also streamed in from neighbouring schools.

Two inquests were opened for further investigation.
