Police in Gqeberha are investigating a case of aggravated robbery following a brazen attack at the Beachfront on Friday.
Basheer Ahmed, aged 32, was out with his family at the Shark Rock Pier in Summerstrand when he was stabbed in the back.
According to a family member who spoke to AlgoaFM News, Ahmed went to his car shortly before 10 PM when he was attacked in the parking lot.
A scuffle ensued and Ahmed was stabbed several more times by a knife-wielding man who made off with Ahmed's wallet and other personal belongings.
According to his sister, a bather alerted them to the incident when he heard Ahmed screaming for help.
An ambulance arrived a short while later and rushed Ahmed to a hospital.
Captain Janse van Rensburg is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who can identify the suspect to come forward.
Summerstrand area Ward Councillor Renaldo Gouws said he would raise the incident at their next Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting on Wednesday.
"I find it regrettable that this incident took place and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims,” said Gouws.
“This incident along with many others along our beachfront can easily be prevented if we had a dedicated Tourism Protection Unit. Unfortunately, there seems to be no will from Provincial and National SAPS as this matter has been raised for years with them and yet we are the only major Metro without a dedicated Tourism Protection Unit."
Gouws said the Beachfront should be the Metro's pride and joy but sadly it is not currently the case.
"It truly is a sad state of affairs but I will continue to fight to improve security along our golden mile in Nelson Mandela Bay," said Gouws.
