The body of a man, who went missing while swimming at Brighton Beach in Gqeberha this weekend, has been found.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says his body was found by members of the community on Monday just after 8 am.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) responded to the call on Sunday afternoon.

Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, says the NRSI, Bluewater Bay Lifeguards and police responded to the scene.

He says the victim's friend reportedly tried to rescue him but was unsuccessful.

Despite a joint extensive sea and shoreline search, there was no sign of him.

An inquest has since been opened by police.

The identity of the deceased, believed to be in his twenties, will only be released once his next of kin has been informed.

According to both police and the NSRI, the deceased is from another province.
