A 53-year-old man from Gqeberha sustained a gunshot wound in the back following an armed robbery of two neighbouring houses in Lakeside.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says a 34-year-old woman and her boyfriend were asleep at their plot in Lakeside Road when she heard glass breaking at about 1.30 am.

Naidu says the woman immediately escaped to her neighbour's house which is on the same plot, leaving her boyfriend behind with four intruders.

She says while next door, they again heard glass breaking and one of the unknown men entered with a firearm demanding, money, drugs and guns.

Naidu says after the suspect fled with just cell phones, she went back to her house once she heard everything was quiet and found that her boyfriend was shot.

She says a leather handbag with a wallet, a flat-screen TV and money was taken, and the estimated value of the stolen items is R40 000.

Naidu says the man was taken to hospital for treatment and a case of attempted murder and two cases of house robbery is being investigated.

A manhunt has been launched for the suspects and police are yet to get a statement from the victim.
