A 33-year old Southern Cape man has been sentenced to an effective 10-years in prison for the attempted murder of a two-year-old boy.
The man, whose identity is being withheld to protect the identity of the child, was sentenced in the Thembalethu Regional Court on Tuesday.
In December 2017 the toddler was rushed to the Red Cross Children's hospital in Cape Town for urgent medical treatment after his private parts were physically removed with a pair of scissors and were left hanging by a thread.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the mother of the boy ran out of her house with the blood-stained child, reporting that her partner had cut the boy’s penis with a pair of scissors.
The boy was rushed to the George hospital from where he was immediately transferred to the Red Cross Children's hospital in Cape Town in a critical condition due to the loss of blood.
The Conville police were alerted and arrested the 33 -year-old suspect after he initially tried to evade arrest.
During his trial, he told the court that he was on drugs and could not give a reason for the barbaric act.
The victim had to undergo immediate surgery and was discharged from hospital twee weeks later.
