Man scammed after selling his bakkie online

Police in Nelson Mandela Bay are investigating a case of fraud after an unknown man who responded to a Ford Bantam bakkie advertisement on social media, disappeared with the vehicle, allegedly without paying.

Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said the complainant was contacted by a prospective buyer, a day after posting the advertisement on Saturday, 13 March.

She said the two communicated constantly via WhatsApp and arranged to meet in Cape Road, in Newton Park on the following Monday, for the buyer to take the bakkie for a test drive.

Janse Van Rensburg said he indicated that he was satisfied with the vehicle and said his uncle will make the payment straight away via EFT.

The complainant allegedly received the proof of payment shortly after and released the vehicle to the man.

Janse Van Rensburg said he later realised that the payment never reflected in his bank account.

He has not been able to make contact with the buyer again.

Police have issued a warning to members of the public to not fall for online scams.
