The ANC in the Eastern Cape has announced the suspension of five Provincial Executive Members who have pending court cases.

The party reinforced its commitment to the renewal of the organisation against members involved in fraud and corruption allegations.

Provincial Secretary, Lulama Ngcukayitobi, on Tuesday briefed the media on the outcomes of the party's Provincial Executive Committee's two-day meeting over the weekend.

He said former Health MEC, Sindiswa Gomba, and former Buffalo City mayor, Zukiswa Ncitha, as well as Zandisile Qupe, are amongst those suspended.

Both Gomba and Ncitha have been implicated in fraud and money laundering allegations relating to Nelson Mandela's funeral.

Ngcukayitobi, said the suspensions are in line with the ANC's constitution which governs the conduct of members.

"Rule 25.70 provides that where a public representative, office bearer or member has been indicted to appear in a court of law on any charge, the secretary-general or the provincial-secretary acting on the authority of the NEC, NWC, and PEC or PWC, is satisfied that the temporary suspension of such member, if in the best interest of the organization, and impose terms and conditions to regulate the participation and conduct during the suspension."

The five suspended ANC PEC officials are Zandisile Quphe, Sindiswa Gomba, Zukiswa Ncitha, Pumlani Mkolo, Tembalethu Ntuthu and Luleka Simon-Ndzele.
