Man's 'bizarre' night out in Mossel Bay ends in suicide

A Man who broke into the holding cells at the Mossel Bay police station on Tuesday has died.

Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Pieter Koekemoer says the 51-year-old Shaun Benton broke into the holding cells shortly after midnight but on his way out got stuck in between the burglar bars leading to the reception area.

He says at this point they have no idea why Benton wanted to break into the cells in the first place.

Officers who eventually noticed that someone was stuck, rushed to investigate and helped him to free himself.

Koekemoer says the man sustained some cuts and bruises and was taken to the Mossel Bay hospital to be treated.

Once Benton was bandaged up he was arrested and taken back to the very same holding cells where he tried to break in just hours earlier.

Later on Tuesday morning, a warder found Benton hanging from his cell. He used the bandages from his wounds to hang himself.

Police said he was still breathing but died soon after.

Paramedics declared him dead on the scene.
