Man pockets life cover with false death claim

A 36-year-old man made a brief appearance in the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Tuesday following his arrest for fraud.

Spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni says it is alleged that Sezardino Diko applied for a life policy at Liberty Life in April of 2018 for an amount of R2.5 million where he was listed as the sole beneficiary.

Diko made a false claim at Standard Bank in June that same year and pocketed the sum of R2.5 million rand, claiming that his brother Siyanda Diko had passed on.

Tonjeni says police later learned that both were one and the same person.

Diko submitted false documents such as a death certificate and even a post mortem at Doves Funeral Parlour in Mthatha which resulted in the burial of an unknown man at Mbuqe Park Cemetery.

The accused was released on R10 000 bail with strict conditions and may not go anywhere near the cemetery.

Tonjeni says police are busy exhuming the body that was buried as the accused's so-called brother.

The matter was postponed to the 20th of December.
