One man is still missing and two others have been rescued after they were caught in strong currents while trying to cross the Sundays River near Port Elizabeth.
The National Sea Rescue Institute said on Sunday that rescue teams were activated at about 6.15pm.
Station Commander, Ian Gray, said their duty crew and Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Water Rescue Network were activated while Blue Water Bay Surf Lifesaving lifeguards, who had a rescue rubber-duck on Sundays River at the time, immediately responded.
On arrival on the scene, two men were found safe out the water and they sustained only minor injuries.
However, Gray said a 35-year-old, remains missing despite an extensive search.
It appeared that a group of up to 20 men had been swimming across the river when three of them were reportedly caught in strong currents, Gray said.
