A man has appeared in the St Albans Magistrates' Court on Monday morning following his arrest for public violence and malicious injury to property.
This follows last week's incident at the Fairview Racecourse in Port Elizabeth where a mob of about 200 people from the Fairview Informal Settlement stormed onto the property where they released 28 racehorses from their stables.
Several horses sustained injuries from being cut or beaten whilst another horse died from a broken neck he sustained in the chaos that followed.
All the horses have since been accounted for.
The 49-year-old Zukile Matshisi was the only person arrested during last week's incident and spend four days behind bars before his court appearance on Monday where he was released on bail.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Matshisi was released on bail and must be back in court on the 26th of October.
She says more arrests are possible and additional charges could be added.
Last week's incident was because of a labour dispute involving grooms at Fairview.
The incident went viral on social media with animal lovers and the public at large expressing their shock at what had transpired.
