Lungisa's anxious wait for outcome of bail hearing

Andile Lungisa outside prison in Port Elizabeth last week where he started serving his two-year prison sentence

The ANC's jailed former councillor, Andile Lungisa, will have to sweat it out a few more days before he knows whether or not he will get bail.

Grahamstown High Court judge, Motilal Rugunanan, reserved judgment on Monday.

Lungisa is seeking bail pending the outcome of his application to the Constitutional Court for leave to appeal his two-year jail sentence for assault.

His lawyer, Alwyn Griebenow, says the judge indicated that he may be ready to give his judgment on Wednesday or the latest on Friday.

Lungisa began serving his jail sentence last week after the Supreme Court of Appeal rejected his application for leave to appeal.

He was found guilty of hitting the DA’s Rayno Kayser with a glass jug over his head at the now-infamous 2016 council brawl.

He has since resigned as a Mayoral Committee member and the ANC has recalled him as NMB councillor.
