Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has confirmed that several students had been threatened by a man brandishing a large knife as they boarded a shuttle bus to the campus.
NMMU spokepserson, Rosslyn Baaitjies, says the suspect, who is also a student, ripped apart students books and slashed a T-shirt that a female student had been wearing.
She says the student was eventually detained by police who had to use pepper spray to subdue him.
Baaitjies says the student will be dealt with in accordance with the university's internal disciplinary proceedings.
It is understood that the suspect had threatened members of the DA student organisation, Daso, and that the incident may be linked to the SRC elections which take place on campus on Wednesday.
