Police in Knysna have opened an inquest docket after a man drowned in the Knysna Lagoon.
The tragedy happened at noon on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the NSRI Craig Lambinon says a fisherman raised the alarm of a drowning in progress and they responded to the scene with all roleplayers.
He says the missing man's friend said they waded into the water when his friend disappeared.
NSRI swimmers conducted an extended surface water search and free dive search efforts but when their efforts were unsuccessful, the Police Dive Unit was activated.
Lambinon says they conducted a scuba dive search and located the body.
Garden Route police identified the victim as local resident Innocent Ntlanga.
His age is not yet known.
