Police in Gqeberha have opened up an inquest docket after a man jumped off the Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 28-year-old jumped at about 6 pm on Tuesday.

She says bystanders who saw him jump rushed to assist him when they realised he was not moving in the water.

Naidu says by the time they reached the shore the victim was already dead.

She identified him as Luthando Bailey from Yoyo Street in Walmer Location.

According to eyewitnesses, Bailey was in the company of three women who were all highly intoxicated.

A post mortem will be conducted and the body has been handed over to Forensic Pathology Services.
