A 25 year old man has died after being bitten by a shark in waist deep water at Port St. Johns.
NSRI station commander, John Costello, says the man from Tombo in Transkei suffered multiple traumatic lacerations to his torso, arms and legs in yesterday's attack.
He says a surfer, and other bathers, managed to rescue the man from the water while lifeguards and a doctor who happened to be at the beach began treatment before paramedics arrived.
However, Costello says the man died at a local clinic.
He says the Natal Sharks Board is currently carrying out studies to determine why there has been a frequent spate of shark incidents in Port St. Johns.
