A three-year-old boy died after he was stabbed several times, allegedly by his stepfather, in Bokone near Mahikeng, North West police said on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh said the incident occurred on Wednesday.
She says he stabbed both his stepchildren, before killing himself.
Myburg says the 7-year-old child survived the attack and was taken to a hospital where he is in a serious condition.
It is alleged that the man stabbed the two children before fleeing the scene in a brown Honda Ballade.
Police launched a manhunt and found the vehicle on Thursday where it was parked under a tree.
Myburgh says the 33-year-old suspect's body was inside the car and now foul play is suspected at this stage.
A case of murder, attempted murder and an inquest have been opened for further investigation.
