Northern Cape man drowns at Vic Bay

A 35-year-old man from the Northern Cape has drowned after getting into difficulty at Victoria Bay outside George.

The National Sea Rescue Institue said school children on the beach also helped to rescue two other men who got into difficulty in the surf late on Wednesday afternoon.

Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the deceased and the two rescued men, were part of a group from the Northern Cape visiting the area.

"NSRI rescue swimmers, WC Government Health EMS and ER24 ambulance services responded directly to the scene and the sea rescue craft Clement Gold Rescuer proceeded by sea from our NSRI base to Victoria Bay," he said.

"On arrival on the scene we found all three male casualties had been assisted out of the water by bystanders, some of the bystanders are believed to be school learners.  NSRI medical crew members assisted by members of the public had initiated Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation efforts on one of the male casualties."

However, Lambinon said he was declared dead on the scene.

The remaining two casualties, age 20 and 15, were taken to hospital for further treatment and were discharged later.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
