The Gqeberha Flying Squad arrested a 52-year-old man in the Karoo for being in possession of abalone valued at more than R340 000.
Police spokesperson, Captain Lariane Jonker, said the members received information about a Toyota Hilux construction bakkie travelling to Cradock when it was stopped and searched about 40 kilometres from the town.
She said 26 bags containing 2150 shucked units of abalone were confiscated and handed over to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in Gqeberha.
Captain Jonker said the bakkie was impounded for further investigation.
She said the suspect will appear in the Cradock Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
