Port Elizabeth police have arrested a man in his early 20's during gang-related violence in Helenvale over the weekend.
Spokesperson, WO Alwin Labans says police followed a white Toyota Tazz, suspected to be involved in previous gang related incidents, on Saturday evening and later pulled it over.
He says a shootout ensued between the driver and police, but the suspect was later arrested and police confiscated a 9mm pistol and a round of ammunition.
Labans says people from a nearby tarvern then threw bottles and stones at the police, and they retreated.
He says the suspect, who claimed he was shot by police in the hand, will also be charged with attempted murder.
Labans says later last night, when police searched a suspected VW Caddy, also in Helenvale, police members were again pelted with stones by a large group of community members.
He says four police vehicles were danaged, and one man was arrested for public violence.
