Centane police have arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 72-year-old woman and her two-year-old granddaughter, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.
“It is alleged that the suspect, who was armed with an axe, went to the homestead of the victims where he allegedly accosted them in a clandestine manner. The attack took place on Friday 21 April 2017 at about [12 noon] at Khabakazi village, Centane, Captain Jackson Manatha said.
“The deceased were alone at their home during the attack. Both of them suffered upper body injuries. They died at the scene. The motive for the murders is not clear at this point in time. Centane police acted swiftly and arrested the suspect.”
He had been charged with murder and would appear in the Centane Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The grandmother was identified as Nowentile Mkhosana, Manatha said.
Butterworth policing cluster commander Brigadier Trevor Mey condemned the murders of defenceless elderly women and children. He praised Centane police for their expeditious actions which led to the arrest of the suspect.
