Malema's assault rifle case postponed to September due to lockdown

EFF Leader Julius Malema

The current lockdown regulations have resulted in yet another postponement of the court case against EFF leader Julius Malema who allegedly fired an assault rifle during the party's birthday celebrations in Mdantsane two years ago.

Malema and his guard Adriaan Snyman were supposed to appear in the East London Magistrates' Court on Thursday but due to Covid-19 lockdown regulations, the matter was postponed to the 17th of September.

Malema faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as three counts of contravening the Firearms Control Act.

Snyman faces one charge of contravening the Act.
Malema allegedly discharged a rifle at a stadium in Mdanstane during the EFF's 5th-anniversary celebrations.

Malema has vehemently denied firing any shots whilst his lawyer said that it was a toy gun.

The charges against the accused were laid by Afriforum.

The accused were not present in court on Thursday.
