A 59-year-old Makhanda scrap metal dealer was arrested and 120 kilograms of copper seized at his business premises in Joza Township.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said “the consignment was already packed and ready to be delivered in Gqeberha” when police arrived armed with a search warrant on Monday morning.
He said members of the Visible Policing Unit were acting on a tip-off when they raided the premises.
The man will appear in court soon for allegedly contravening the Second-Hand Goods Act.
Nkholi said, “stakeholders like Telkom, Eskom, Transnet, and the local municipality” were contacted to identify some of the copper items that were seized during the arrest."
Sarah Baartmaan District Commander, Brigadier John Lebok, commended the members for the arrest.
