The on-going drought in the Eastern Cape continues to bite and for the first time in 40 years, neither the Howieson's Poort Dam nor the Settlers Dam are able to supply water to the resident's of Makhanda.
Makana municipality spokesperson Yoliswa Ramokolo says they've reached the point where they can no longer extract water from these two dams which supply the Western side of the city.
That's because the Howieson's Poort Dam is at just 11.2% and the Settler's dam at a mere 6.3% of capacity.
Ramokolo says thanks to three boreholes connected to the Waainek Water Treatment Works, they can produce a maximum of 0.5 megalitres of water a day.
The balance of water for the Western side is being supplied by the James Kleynhans Water Treatment Works which is now supplying water to both Makhanda East and Makhanda West.
Ramokolo says its only good rains that will remedy the situation and has urged residents to limit themselves to 25 litres per person per day to a maximum of 100 litres per household.
