The Makana Municipality has been compelled by the Grahamstown High Court to immediately address sanitation problems in the area.
This after the Legal Resource Centre obtained a court order on behalf of 10 Makhanda residents, on Tuesday.
The order was obtained by agreement between the two parties following the municipality's failure to file answering papers.
The municipality has been given 15 days to fix sewage spills in areas highlighted by the ten residents and has also been compelled to submit a report within 30 days, setting out all active sewage spills in Makhanda, together with a budget and a plan to fix it.
Part two of the judgement, which relates to the upgrade of wastewater treatment works has been postponed for the municipality to decide if it wants to oppose the relief sought.
