Port Alfred police have seized 13 000 Mandrax tablets with a street value of R780 000 and arrested two suspects following a high-speed chase on the R72 coastal road.
Captain Mali Govender says the arrest of the men aged 47 and 49 followed a high speed chase involving Port Alfred K9 Unit members and the occupants of a blue Volkswagen Polo.
She says the VW Polo came flying past the K9 Unit members on patrol at very high speed shortly before midnight on Monday.
Captain Govender says the suspects initially ignored the flashing blue lights and blaring police sirens and instead proceeded at speed in the direction of Port Elizabeth, disregarding the police members' instructions to stop.
She said a large packet containing the mandrax tablets was found in the boot after police managed to stop and search the vehicle just before a shopping mall on the R72.
The men were detained on a charge of possession of drugs and will appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate's Court soon.
