A luxury cruise ship called Silver Spirit is currently in Algoa Bay to refuel and restock.
A spokesperson for Transnet Sakhiwo Tetyana says there are no passengers on board the ship, only crewmembers.
He says the ship arrived from Darwin in Australia and requested permission to call at Algoa Bay to get supplies at anchorage.
Tetyana says the Transnet Ports Authority (TNPA) has been working closely with all the relevant departments including the Department of Health to manage requests from cruise liners after new Regulations were promulgated by the Minister of Transport in March to guard against the potential transmission of Covid19.
Tetyana says these Regulations essentially prohibit cruise liner calls, any crew changes, any disembarkations apart from returning South African citizens or permanent residents, and any embarkations unless they are for departing foreign nationals. However, all parties have worked together to manage individual vessels on a case by case basis.
The Silver Spirit will set sail to the next port on Thursday afternoon.
