Lucky escape for police officers in EL

Police in East London are investigating a case of attempted murder after two police officers came under attack.

Police Spokesperson Captain Stephen Marais says the officers were busy with a routine patrol in Duncan Village when they came across a barricade in the road.

The officers had to get out of the vehicle to remove the object when they heard gunshots directed at them.

It was not clear at that stage from which direction the gunshots were coming from or how many attackers were involved. Police then moved themselves to safety and called for back-up. It was later discovered that the police vehicle had five gunshots through it.

The motive for the shooting is believed to have been robbery as barricades are often placed in the road to get motorists to stop.

Marais says motorists who come across such barricades, must rather take an alternative route and report the incident to police
