The Eastern Cape Transport Department said a driver who allegedly forced his way onto a road closed due to runaway veld fires, lost a truck-load of lucerne on Monday afternoon.
Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the driver “allegedly forced” his way into the Nico Malan Pass on the R67 between Seymour and Whittlesea .
He said the road is currently closed due to poor visibility as a result of the veld fires that are raging in some parts of the Eastern Cape.
“The truck driver, with the help of firefighters who had initially advised him not to enter, was able to retouch the trailer which was already engulfed by the flames.
Binqose said the driver was able to escape to safety by uncoupling the trailer.
