EC police operations net 977 suspects

Eastern Cape police said they are continuing with their crime combatting efforts, with 977 criminal suspects arrested between 19 and 25 August.

Provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Office Majola Nkohli, said significant arrests were made in the hotspot areas in the eight districts of the province. 

He said the suspects arrested were wanted for crimes such as murder, rape, robberies (business and residential), theft of motor vehicles, the possession of illicit drugs, and the illegal possession of abalone amongst others.

“Out of 74 932 actions that were executed, there were 35 high-density operations, which are continuing to produce positive outcomes as police maintain the weekly intelligence-led actions,” Nkohli said.

Here he highlights some of the significant executed actions:

  • Persons searched – 24 861
  • Vehicles searched – 7 895
  • Tracking operations by the detectives – 140
  • Vehicle checkpoints manned – 713
  • Roadblocks - 30

Notable arrests:

  • Contravening the Firearms Control Act – 28
  • Illegal possession of firearms – 16
  • Illegal possession of ammunition – 14
  • Dealing in illicit drugs – 28
  • Selling liquor without licence (fines) – 25
  • Drunk driving – 55

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene said she was confident that the successes attained through Operation Shanela are making a difference in the hotspot areas across the province.

‘We are flushing out criminals, as well as increasing the rate of confiscation of illegal firearms in the province,” General Mene added.
