Looting continues on R72 in spite of breakthrough arrests

Motorists travelling on the R-72 at Chaluma Cuttings have once again reported witnessing harrowing incidents as an armed gang tried to loot a truck at a Stop and Go point.

Martin Minnie, who was travelling from Port Elizabeth to East London, said there were about 20 cars and trucks waiting at the Stop and Go.

He said he noticed a group of between 15 and 20 men that he said were armed with pangas and bolt cutters.

Minnie tells us what happened next.

"They were cutting open backs of trucks and looting them. The lady in front of me got her window hit out. They tried to get into her car and she drove onto the oncoming side of the traffic to try and get away" he said

Minnie also describes the chaos that ensued when motorists tried to get away.

"It was chaos. They tried to drive away, doors swinging open with stock falling out the back. Everybody was just trying to get away in all kinds of directions. The oncoming traffic had to swerve to get out of the way" he added.

Algoa FM News received at least three similar reports today from motorists about the armed gangs during the course of the day.

East London police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana, says police will be investigating the reports.

He says police will be working with witnesses and a case will be opened.

Tana says patrols will be sent out to the area.

In October police reported the breakthrough arrest of seven suspects and the recovery of stolen goods worth hundreds of thousands of Rands.
