The brown locust plague affecting the Northern and Eastern Cape is already costing millions of rands to combat according to the national Department of Agriculture.
The Department says in a written reply to Parliament that combatting the plague in various provinces has already cost more than R74,6m.
This includes the cost of appointing and training contractors, as well as the cost of insecticides and related safety material.
The outbreak is described by many as the worst ever with some people recalling a similar outbreak as far back as 1984.
Motorists travelling along the N10 from Gqeberha to Johannesburg have reported not one but up to seven swarms of locusts, especially in the vicinity of Middleburg and Noupoort.
The Department of Agriculture asked the public to report the location of sightings.
