Suspects arrested in Kariega - millions in groceries recovered

Police in Nelson Mandela Bay have arrested seven suspects who allegedly hijacked a grocery truck with produce valued at over R2.2 million.

The men were arrested at around 09h00 on Wednesday at a farm near Kariega with some found hiding in the bushes.

Captain Gerda Swart said the robbery had taken place earlier on John Tallant Road in Gqeberha.

She said the suspects travelling in a white Nissan NP200 bakkie suddenly passed the truck before ordering its driver to pull off the road at gunpoint.

They took control of the vehicle and ordered the two victims to climb into the bakkie and later dropped them off in Motherwell.

After a few hours, the security company noticed that the truck driver was not travelling as scheduled and alerted the police..

Captain Swart said the Nissan UD truck was found abandoned at about 07h30 on the R75 outside Kariega with some of the load missing.

Police followed up on several leads and found a large quantity of the missing groceries on a farm not far from where the truck was located.

Two vehicles loaded with some of the stolen property were also found on the farm.

Captain Swart said the suspects face charges ranging from hijacking to the possession of suspected stolen property and will appear in the Kariega Magistrate's Court on Friday.
