Liquor truck hijacked on N2 near van Stadens

Liquor from the hijacked truck offloaded in the bushes

Port Elizabeth police have recovered a hijacked truck and its consignment of hundreds of thousands of rands worth of liquor.

They also arrested two suspects and seized a 9mm pistol during Tuesday’s incident.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says that at around 10:30 am the truck, carrying over R200 000 worth of liquor, was forced off the N2 highway near Van Stadens in the direction of Jeffrey’s Bay by four men who were travelling in a white Ford Bantam bakkie.

Three suspects were armed and they got into the truck and shoved the 34-year-old driver and his 32-year-old passenger behind the back seat.

Colonel Naidu says the tracker signal indicated that the truck was moving on the R75 near Springs in Uitenhage and a few minutes later it was spotted by the SAPS Airwing pilot.

He assisted Flying Squad members to the direction of the moving truck and they pounced as the suspects were busy offloading the liquor in the bushes.

Two suspects, aged 27 and 48, were arrested and a 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off, a jammer and the driver and passenger’s cell phones were recovered.

All the crates of liquor were also recovered.

Colonel Naidu said the suspects would appear in court soon on charges of truck-jacking and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
