A light aircraft has crashed at East London Airport - critically injuring two people.
Provincial health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says Eastern Cape health emergency services rushed to the airport to render assistance and take the injured to hospital.
He says two critically injured adults were rushed to hospital by helicopter. Three children in the aircraft sustained minor injuries in the crash but were also flown to hospital.
Airports Company of South Africa spokesperson Colin Naidoo says the small private aircraft crash-landed on the main runway at East London airport at around a quarter to eleven this morning.
Naidoo confirmed that there were two adults and three children on board. He told AlgoaFM news that the main runway had to be closed for operational reasons because of the location of the aircraft. He said the second runway remained open to other aircraft.
He said the Airports Company Team at the airport was in the process of removing the light aircraft from the runway so that it could be re-opened.
Naidoo said the cause of the accident was unclear at this stage and was being investigated.
