Licencing services at Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's traffic offices are offline due to a problem believed to be linked with new Live Enrolment Unit machines.
The Metro's head of Safety and Security, John Best, said the system in the Uitenhage traffic department had been offline since Wednesday.
Best said the Municipality believes that the problem is caused by the LEU machines as the problems started after the system had been installed.
He said the municipality will take up the matter further with the national Department of Transport.
"We believe that this is a national problem and not just locally in Port Elizabeth. Since the new LEU machines have been installed there has been a problem nationally, instead of improving the service, it's actually made the service worse which we are not satisfied with and we have asked them to investigate this as a matter of urgency," Best said.
He said officials have also been communicating with the national Department of Transport on a continuous basis to try and get the network up and running.
Best also added that the Korsten Traffic and Licencing service centre will be closed by 14:30 today to ensure that clients who are currently in the queue are assisted before the end of business day.
"On behalf of the municipality, I would like to apologize to residents inconvenienced by this unforeseen problem. We will keep you updated on our municipal platforms and through traditional media channels regarding any new developments concerning services at our Traffic and Licensing service centres," he said.
