Lawyer for PE school girl says sanction was agreed upon following comment on apartheid

The lawyers for a Grade 11 learner at Collegiate High School for girls in Port Elizabeth have announced that a sanction has been agreed on between their client and the school.

This follows an incident at the school recently in which she was heard to say that she wished apartheid could be brought back.

The incident has elicited frenzied condemnation on social media, culminating in a protest by placard waving students at Collegiate earlier on Monday.

The learner, whom AlgoaFM News is choosing not to name as she is minor, has since rendered an unconditional and public apology both at school and on social media - according to her lawyer Craig Jessop.

Jessop says in terms of additional sanction, his client will also be issued with a written warning, will not attend the Matric dinner for 2016 and will participate in a community outreach programme for a period of 5 hours.

Jessop said that as a result of the unacceptable statement and his client's experience over the last two months, she now has a better understanding of the ills of apartheid and is committed to the application of progressive discipline.

Jessop warned, however, that the public ventilation of the matter serves only to delay forgiveness and outreach across all cultures.Collegiate declined to comment at this stage, saying they were awaiting directive from the Education Department.
