The Public Service Accountability Monitor says it may use legislation to obtain a report on fracking in the Karoo, if the report is not made available to the public.
PSAM's Derek Luyt was reacting to a report that government may reconsider the moratorium on fracking once it has studied a multi-departmental task team report into the issue.
He says the public also has a right to study the report.
Luyt says PSAM will use the Promotion of Access to Information Act to obtain the report if necessary.
"We believe that the public has the right to see that report as well in terms of the constitutional right to a safe and healthy environment and we believe the public has a right to see that report in terms of transparency and accountability which we believe the government should hold to, so there is no reason not to make the report public" Luyt said.
