Latest info on PE fuel crisis

Transnet National Ports Authority says it has met the deadline for the completion of repairs to the Port Elizabeth Tanker Berth structure.

Port Elizabeth Port Manager Rajesh Dana says in a statement that repairs were completed ahead of schedule at approximately 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

He added that the Transnet National Ports Authority, together with the relevant oil companies, would continue to ensure that the Port of Port Elizabeth’s Liquid Bulk Terminal remains safe for efficient cargo operations until the commissioning of the tank farm in the Port of Ngqura in 2019.

At that point the existing tank farm will be decommissioned and the land rehabilitated along with that occupied by the manganese facility.

There was a rush on service stations in the greater Nelson Mandela Bay area in the past week, with a specific shortage of unleaded fuel being reported.
The fuel shortage was blamed directly on supply problems as a result of the repair work being carried out at the Tank Farm.

The first shipment of fuel is expected on Thursday, however companies will be transporting fuel by road from Mossel Bay and East London to Port Elizabeth until the end of the week.
