The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape says the crime statistics released on Friday show that the bloody wave of violent crime continues to sweep through the Eastern Cape.
This, despite a 2.2% drop in murders.
DA MPL, Bobby Stevenson, says that 3 879 people lost the lives in the Eastern Cape in the last financial year.
He says the EC also has six stations in the murder top 30, including Mthatha at 6th, Bethelsdorp, New Brighton and Motherwell in Nelson
Mandela Bay at 12th, 21st, and 30th respectively.
The other top 30 stations are Libode at 26th and Lusikisiki at 28th place.
Stevenson says collectively 709 people were murdered in these policing districts between April 2019 and March 2020.
Meanwhile, two EC stations, Mount Road and Kwazakhele in Nelson Mandela Bay are in the top 30 crime stations in the country for truck hijackings.
According to the figures, Mount Road Police Station has recorded a 200% increase in truck hijackings in the 2019/2020 financial year.
Six incidents were reported in the 2018/2019 financial year and this grew to 18 cases in the last book year.
Cele said Kwazakhele police station saw a 36.4% increase in truck hijackings from 11 to 15 cases.
