Last two slain Ngcobo policemen laid to rest this weekend

The last two of the five Eastern Cape policemen who were killed during the attack on the Ngcobo police station earlier this month were laid to rest this weekend.

On Saturday, Constable Sibongiseni Sandlana, was laid to rest at Cofinvaba.  On Sunday, the last of the slain members, Constable Kuhle Metete, will be laid to rest.

Speaking at Constable Sandlana’s funeral service, Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga, said she saluted the heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty.

"He has silently closed the doors on us and left and for that we miss him. To Sandlana family, you are always in our thoughts and prayers. The fact that Cst Sandlana died while on duty, he will remain a hero and continue to linger endlessly in our thoughts, "she said.

She further echoed her constant call for members to be always operational ready and prioritise their own safety.

“l urge all police to pick up the spear where Cst Sandlana left off and forge forward with our vision of ensuring that our people are free from crime,” said Lieutenant-General Ntshinga.

Brigadier Nkombisa, who spoke on behalf of Cofimvaba Cluster, remembered Constable Sandlana as a strong-willed member, “one of the best teams at the station”.

"This shift was recognized as the best performing shift last year. He also did a splendid job at the court including accompanying prisoners to and from court," said Brigadier Nkombisa.

Representing the office of Minister of Police Minister Bheki Cele and the National Commissioner, General Sitole, Regional Commissioner for Management intervention, Lieutenant-General Magadlela said senior management has heeded to the cries of the community and something is being done to improve the situation and safety of Engcobo police station.

“All our police officials must be extra vigilant and operational ready at all times. Our police are very vulnerable and dedicate their lives to the protection of the community,” said Lieutenant-Gen Magadlela.
