A lamp that was made by a blind resident from George, was auctioned in aid of the Emmas Hostel. Emmas is a protected workshop with hostel facilities.
The lamp, that was named... the Tree of Light, was created by Solly van Belling, who is a resident at the hostel.
The tree of light is in a unique shape resembling a tree and was auctioned at the civic centre in George.
The closing bid for the artwork was R10 000. The lamp was made from wood, wire, and old material pieces.
The artist, who is blind in his one eye and has only 5% sight in his other eye, said the light that shines out from the centre of the tree, is symbolic for the people at the
hostel.
It also won the first place in 2012 during the Eskom energy efficient lighting design competition.
