Labour Department accepts Eyethu Fishing accident report

The report and recommendations of the structural engineer, appointed to investigate the partial collapse of the Eyethu Fishing building in the Port Elizabeth harbour last Thursday night, have been accepted by the Department of Labour.

Eyethu Fishing chairperson, Stephen Dondolo, says while the investigation is being conducted, the company's management team took steps on several levels to support the injured workers and their families, as well as to determine the cause of the accident.

He says they have worked closely with the Department of Labour and have also interacted with the Food and Allied Workers Union.

86 workers were injured last week, when the mezzanine floor passage next to the canteen in the fish processing building collapsed.

Of the 17 workers who were admitted to local hospitals, 11 are still hospitalised with mainly leg and ankle injuries.

Operations in the production facility are continuing, while the damaged section has been cordoned off.

Repairs will begin soon.
