The Newton Park indoor swimming pool in Port Elizabeth remains closed, as the tender for the rehabilitation of the facility could not be awarded, because there was no quorum at a recent Bid Evaluation Committee.
A report to the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services committee that meets next week, says an evaluation of the six tenders submitted for the work has been conducted by the architects.
The conclusion, however, was that none of them could demonstrate sufficient competence, reputation and experience related to the specialised scope of the work.
Assessing the various options, the directorate recommended that an agreement should be secured with the preferred tenderer that he employ suitable subcontractors with the required specialised experience in retiling the pool.
The closure of the pool has already resulted in the cancellation of one major gala in the Metro.
