Eastern Cape police management have expressed their shock at the cold-blooded killing of six people on Tuesday night at Dabekweni Locality, in Kwaaiman.
Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says the deceased include a 42-year-old mother and her children aged between six months and ten years-old.
An axe was found on the scene and appears to have been the murder weapon.
Brigadier Kinana says police detectives are investigating but that no arrests have been made at this stage.
However, the slain woman’s husband, who is of Zimbabwean origin, has disappeared and police believe he can assist police with their investigation.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, described the incident as shattering.
“It is inconceivable that at the opening day of the 16 Days of Activism we can wake up to such a horrible and distressing incident. Whoever is behind these gruesome and heartless murders must be found without any delays.”
Lieutenant General Ntshinga has ordered the activation of the 72 hour action plan in order to apprehend the person or persons responsible.
