Kuyga school bus services to resume on Monday

The Eastern Cape Transport Department says it's currently dealing with logistics to ensure that the free bus service for school children in Kuyga in the Greenbushes area of Port Elizabeth resumes on Monday.

The decision by the department follows violent protests by more than 2000 community members in the Kuyga area in recent days -  after the free bus service, which transports learners to farm schools, was scraped.

The MEC for Transport, Weziwe Tikana and Education MEC, Mandla Makupula met with Kuyga residents on Wednesday evening where the decision was taken to bring back the service.

The free bus service was cut earlier this year due budget constraints forcing school children to attend Kuyga Intermediate Primary which is already full.

The department's Head of Communications, Khuselwa Rantshi, confirmed to AlgoaFm News that plans are in place to ensure that the free bus service to farm schools around Kuyga resumes this coming Monday.

"They have agreed that transportation of those learners will resume as of Monday next week," Rantshi said, " The office is busy looking at the logistics to ensure that the agreement is implemented."
