The Eastern Cape Transport Department said it was currently dealing with logistics to ensure that the free bus service for school children in Kuyga in the Greenbushes area of Port Elizabeth resumes on Monday.
The decision by the department follows violent protests by more than 2000 community members in the Kuyga area over the past few days after the free bus service, which transports learners to farm schools, was scrapped.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana and Education MEC, Mandla Makupula met with Kuyga residents on Wednesday night where the decision was taken to bring back the service.
The free bus service was cut earlier this year due budgetary constraints, forcing school children to attend Kuyga Intermediate Primary which is already full.
The department's Head of Communications, Khuselwa Rantshi, confirmed to Algoa FM News that plans were in place to ensure that the free bus service to farm schools around Kuyga resumed on Monday.
Meanwhile, Port Elizabeth police used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse angry protesters at Die Gaat in the centre of Helenvale in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas on Thursday.
Algoa FM News also received reports from the area that the gang-element had become involved in the protests with concerned parents expressing concern for the safety of their children at schools in Helenvale.
Warrant Officer Alvin Labans said protesters burned tyres with police also retaliating at stone-throwing protesters.
Residents of the Northern Areas have been protesting all week with regard to unemployment, a lack of opportunities for local SMME's as well as gangsterism.
However, Labans said it was not clear what had sparked Thursday morning's violence.
