The Western Cape Education Department says it views the arrest of a Knysna deputy school principal on a charge of sexual assault in a very serious light.
Members of the George Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit arrested the 51-year-old teacher last night after the mother of a 12-year-old primary school girl laid a charge.
Police spokesperson, captain Malcolm Pojie, says he was allegedly caught red-handed by the school principal in an office on Monday.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson, Paddy Attwell, says a departmental investigation will be instituted as a matter of priority.
"The Child protection unit in George told our circuit manager this morning that they had arrested a teacher on Wednesday night and that he would appear in court on Friday. The district office has arranged for a social worker and a school Psychologist to council the 12 year old learner concerned. The staff will also be debriefed following the shock after the arrest of their colleague" Attwell said.
